Vitamin B9

Vitamin B9 (better known as folic acid) plays multiple roles in the body, particularly during the perinatal period. It is involved in all processes of cell growth and division. Vitamin B9 contributes to the growth of maternal tissues during pregnancy. Folic acid supplementation increases the mother's folate status. A low folate status in the mother is a risk factor for neural tube defects in the developing fetus. [1,2]

Vitamin B9 can include: [3]

  • folates, the natural form of vitamin B9, which are naturally present in foods,
  • folic acid, of synthetic origin found in some dietary supplements, but which is not properly absorbed by all women.

Many women are deficient in vitamin B9 without knowing it. Health authorities (ANSES) recommend supplementing with vitamin B9, at a dose of 400 µg/day (amount present in Pregnancy Multivitamin) from the time of conception and during the first three months of pregnancy.

At Boome, we have chosen to combine two forms of vitamin B9: natural folates from lemon extract and a patented and methylated form, 5-MTHF Quatrefolic®. This unique and hybrid combination allows us to better meet varied metabolic profiles. The vitamin B9 from folates is directly sourced from citrus fruits and lemon in particular. We have also combined our vitamin B9 with vitamin B12, zinc, and choline to maximize its effects.

Choline

Few expecting mothers know this, but choline requirements increase during pregnancy. Most prenatal vitamins still overlook it; at Boome, it's at the heart of our formula.

Choline is the precursor to phospholipids, major components of our cell membranes. [1] During pregnancy, the demand for choline intensifies to support the structure of these membranes and meet the increased needs of the maternal organism. Produced by the liver in small quantities, an external supply is necessary to meet these needs. [2,3]

It is widely studied in scientific literature: American epidemiological studies show that nearly 90% of pregnant women have intakes below nutritional recommendations. [4] By integrating a precise dose of choline into our formula, Boome contributes to optimizing nutritional intake, and works hand in hand with folates in the methylation process, a fundamental chemical reaction for DNA synthesis.

Choline acts in complementarity with folates (vitamin B9): it acts as a valuable metabolic cofactor that supports the methylation cycle.

Iodine

Derived from ascophyllum (a carefully selected brown seaweed), our iodine is a high-quality, natural plant-based source. It plays a key role from the very first day of pregnancy. [1]

  • Cognitive function & Nervous system: Iodine contributes to normal cognitive function and the normal functioning of the nervous system, which are essential throughout the perinatal period.
  • Maternal balance: During pregnancy, iodine requirements increase to support normal thyroid hormone production. [2,3] Our natural iodine, derived from seaweed, is gently absorbed to support the mother’s thyroid balance.

Ferrochel® iron bisglycinate

Iron is a fundamental mineral for our body. [1] It is involved in many bodily mechanisms such as oxygen transport, the immune system, cognitive development, and the reduction of fatigue. [2] It is generally supplied by food (red meat) but it is not uncommon to be deficient (especially if you have very heavy periods or are pregnant!), as its deficiency affects 30% of the world's population. [3,4]

Our iron is clinically studied and patented (Ferrochel®): Very well absorbed by the body [4], it benefits from excellent intestinal tolerance without causing digestive discomfort. [5]

In addition to these many advantages, Ferrochel® is what is known as chelated iron, meaning the iron molecule is bound to other molecules (in this case, it is bound to amino acids: two glycines), which positively impacts its bioavailability.

FAQs

Does your iron supplement cause stomach upset?

No! Several scientific studies have shown the benefits of our patented Ferrochel® iron and bisglycinate iron in gastrointestinal disorders, particularly in pregnant women, compared to other forms of iron (such as iron sulfate). [1,2

How do I know if I am iron deficient?

Only a biological assessment can detect an iron deficiency. Signs of iron deficiency (or rather, a decrease in your stores) often include persistent fatigue, pale skin, or unusual shortness of breath. Iron is essential for your energy levels² and immunity⁴. If you experience these symptoms, we recommend consulting your doctor to measure your ferritin levels (the storage protein) and detect any potential iron deficiency.

Can I take Multivitamines Grossesse at the same time as Fer ?

Yes! However, we advise you to take your iron supplement at a different time from a multivitamin complex, such as Multivitamines Grossesse. Some minerals (like zinc) interact with iron, so you should ensure there is a gap of at least 3 hours between doses.

For example, we recommend taking your Multivitamines Grossesse capsules in the morning and your Iron capsules before dinner.

Why take prenatal multivitamins?

The consumption of supplements during pregnancy as part of a healthy and varied diet helps support the body and provide it with key nutrients.

At the heart of pregnancy supplementation: vitamin B9 (folate). In France, the observation is striking: only 23% of women receive vitamin B9 supplementation from the preconception period (National Perinatal Survey, 2016).

However, the importance of a high folate status from the very start of planning a child is central to scientific literature. Historical research has shown that supplementation started at least 1 month before conception significantly increases maternal folate status. This optimization of the body's condition is crucial, because a low folate status in the mother is a proven risk factor in the development of neural tube defects in the fetus.

In France, 75% of women of childbearing age have a vitamin B9 deficiency and may not even know it.

Choosing well-formulated pregnancy vitamins, with a bioavailable form of vitamin B9, and free from nanoparticles and other controversial substances, is preferable. The French College of Gynecologists and Obstetricians (CNGOF) and the French National Authority for Health (HAS) also recommend vitamin D and B9 supplementation.

Informed supplementation should be long-term. Today, our lifestyles, dietary restrictions, and food processing (overcooking or steps related to the agri-food industry) no longer allow us to obtain all the vitamins and minerals the body needs to go through all stages of pregnancy. Conscious supplementation allows you to give your body the chance to be supported before, during, and after pregnancy.

Why combine Quatrefolic® (5-MTHF) with natural folates?

By diversifying the source of vitamin B9, we ensure ideal absorption, in order to better meet various metabolic profiles. The body has immediate access to the form that suits it best. Quatrefolic® complements the overall intake of our natural lemon-extracted folates, our signature ingredient.

Is it good to take Fer every day?

If your ferritin level is confirmed to have decreased and verified by your doctor, you can follow their recommendations (conversely, iron overload is not good). Our course of treatment is designed to be taken daily, but the dosage can be adjusted with the approval of your healthcare professional.

Can I get Fer without a prescription?

You do not need a prescription to buy a Boome food supplement, but iron supplementation should be supervised by a healthcare professional.
