Vitamin B9

Vitamin B9 (better known as folic acid) plays multiple roles in the body, particularly during the perinatal period. It is involved in all processes of cell growth and division. Vitamin B9 contributes to the growth of maternal tissues during pregnancy. Folic acid supplementation increases the mother's folate status. A low folate status in the mother is a risk factor for neural tube defects in the developing fetus. [1,2]

Vitamin B9 can include: [3]

  • folates, the natural form of vitamin B9, which are naturally present in foods,
  • folic acid, of synthetic origin found in some dietary supplements, but which is not properly absorbed by all women.

Many women are deficient in vitamin B9 without knowing it. Health authorities (ANSES) recommend supplementing with vitamin B9, at a dose of 400 µg/day (amount present in Pregnancy Multivitamin) from the time of conception and during the first three months of pregnancy.

At Boome, we have chosen to combine two forms of vitamin B9: natural folates from lemon extract and a patented and methylated form, 5-MTHF Quatrefolic®. This unique and hybrid combination allows us to better meet varied metabolic profiles. The vitamin B9 from folates is directly sourced from citrus fruits and lemon in particular. We have also combined our vitamin B9 with vitamin B12, zinc, and choline to maximize its effects.

Choline

Few expecting mothers know this, but choline requirements increase during pregnancy. Most prenatal vitamins still overlook it; at Boome, it's at the heart of our formula.

Choline is the precursor to phospholipids, major components of our cell membranes. [1] During pregnancy, the demand for choline intensifies to support the structure of these membranes and meet the increased needs of the maternal organism. Produced by the liver in small quantities, an external supply is necessary to meet these needs. [2,3]

It is widely studied in scientific literature: American epidemiological studies show that nearly 90% of pregnant women have intakes below nutritional recommendations. [4] By integrating a precise dose of choline into our formula, Boome contributes to optimizing nutritional intake, and works hand in hand with folates in the methylation process, a fundamental chemical reaction for DNA synthesis.

Choline acts in complementarity with folates (vitamin B9): it acts as a valuable metabolic cofactor that supports the methylation cycle.

Iodine

Derived from ascophyllum (a carefully selected brown seaweed), our iodine is a high-quality, natural plant-based source. It plays a key role from the very first day of pregnancy. [1]

  • Cognitive function & Nervous system: Iodine contributes to normal cognitive function and the normal functioning of the nervous system, which are essential throughout the perinatal period.
  • Maternal balance: During pregnancy, iodine requirements increase to support normal thyroid hormone production. [2,3] Our natural iodine, derived from seaweed, is gently absorbed to support the mother’s thyroid balance.

Microalgae Schizochytrium sp.

Microalgae oil Schizochytrium sp. is an alternative to fish oil, which is commonly used for Omega-3s. Fish, in fact, do not produce omega-3s; they accumulate them by eating algae.

A true healthy and ecological alternative thanks to its composition, the microalga Schizochytrium sp. is cultivated free from any oceanic pollution, making it a more responsible ingredient free of heavy metals. No odor and no problems associated with overfishing. [1]

For informational purposes, one ton of algal oil is equivalent to 60 tons of wild fish. This microalga is also very rich in Omega-3, as the DHA content can reach 45%, compared to 25.2% for fish oil. [1,2]

Furthermore, several scientific studies have investigated the role of omega-3s in the body, particularly during the maternity journey. [3-7]

Pregnancy needs

Motherhood is a physiological marathon divided into key stages. Each phase has its own requirements. The Duo Pack (Multivitamins + Omega-3) has been designed to be your nutritional guide, ensuring your body has the necessary resources for each chapter of this adventure.

The foundation of the nervous system

In the first few weeks, the neural tube forms. This is the period when folates (B9) intervene to support cell division². Although the brain is still tiny, the foundations of each nervous structure are being laid. [1,2]

Neuronal and cognitive development

It is from the 20th week that brain development accelerates.

  • The brain: The fetus accumulates fatty acids, particularly DHA, to build its neuronal membranes.
  • Vision: Retinal cells begin to structure themselves. DHA is the main component of eye tissues.

This is the ideal time to ensure your Omega-3 intake is optimal, as the fetus cannot synthesize them on its own; it depends exclusively on your reserves.

Keep up with growing needs

This is the phase of massive ‘stockpiling’. During the last three months, the need for DHA is at its peak.

Accelerated growth: The brain’s weight almost triples during this trimester.

After birth, the development of the brain and vision does not stop at birth: it continues intensively during the first years of life. Our combination is particularly beneficial if you are breastfeeding: you pass on these essential fatty acids directly via your milk.

The mother’s intake of DHA contributes to the normal development of the brain and eyes of the breastfed child.*

FAQs

Why combine Quatrefolic® (5-MTHF) with natural folates?

By diversifying the source of vitamin B9, we ensure ideal absorption, in order to better meet various metabolic profiles. The body has immediate access to the form that suits it best. Quatrefolic® complements the overall intake of our natural lemon-extracted folates, our signature ingredient.

Is it good to take Omega 3 every day?

As part of a balanced diet, it is recommended to increase your sources of Omega-3, such as regular consumption of small fish (e.g., sardines, anchovies, or herring) or oils rich in them. In this case, our vegan Omega-3 can be taken as a 1 to 3-month course, once or twice a year.

How to tell if you have an Omega-3 deficiency?

An Omega-3 deficiency can manifest in various ways. It might go unnoticed. Therefore, it's best to ask your doctor to include Omega-3s in your blood test.

Why take prenatal vitamins?

The consumption of supplements during pregnancy as part of a healthy and varied diet helps support the body and provide it with key nutrients.

At the heart of pregnancy supplementation: vitamin B9 (folate). In France, the observation is striking: only 23% of women receive vitamin B9 supplementation from the preconception period (National Perinatal Survey, 2016).

However, the importance of a high folate status from the very start of planning a child is central to scientific literature. Historical research has shown that supplementation started at least 1 month before conception significantly increases maternal folate status. This optimization of the body's condition is crucial, because a low folate status in the mother is a proven risk factor in the development of neural tube defects in the fetus.

In France, 75% of women of childbearing age have a vitamin B9 deficiency and may not even know it.

Choosing well-formulated pregnancy vitamins, with a bioavailable form of vitamin B9, and free from nanoparticles and other controversial substances, is preferable. The French College of Gynecologists and Obstetricians (CNGOF) and the French National Authority for Health (HAS) also recommend vitamin D and B9 supplementation.

Informed supplementation should be long-term. Today, our lifestyles, dietary restrictions, and food processing (overcooking or steps related to the agri-food industry) no longer allow us to obtain all the vitamins and minerals the body needs to go through all stages of pregnancy. Conscious supplementation allows you to give your body the chance to be supported before, during, and after pregnancy.

Why doesn't Multivitamines Grossesse contain iron?

Our formula does not contain iron by choice.

  • Optimized bioavailability: The absence of iron in our prenatal multivitamin allows for the absorption of other minerals (such as magnesium and zinc) present in our formula, without nutritional competition.
  • Safety: Iron supplementation should not be systematic but targeted in cases of proven deficiency (after a blood test) by your doctor. By separating iron from your daily multivitamins, we allow you to manage your iron needs in an isolated and optimal way.
